Clinic & Cubby (Boys & Girls 6-9)

Clinic

SCAA Clinic provides boys and girls in 1st through 4th grades the opportunity to learn the basics of basketball. Players learn warm-up exercises, dribbling, passing, shooting, and defense from coaches, parents, and high school players who all volunteer their time. Weekly clinics start in mid-November and end in mid-March; and are held Tuesday nights from 6:00–7:30pm at Aki Kurose Middle School (subject to change). If interested in our Clinic program, please email clinic@scaayouth.org for more information.

Fundamentals – Our clinic emphasizes basic basketball fundamentals while providing a fun learning environment. At an early age, it is not only important to teach correct basketball techniques but also necessary to maintain their passion for the game through drills that catch their attention and keep them engaged. Repetition is one of the keys to their growth and development through muscle memory, but it can also become redundant. We do our best to vary each drill to educate them on basketball fundamentals while keeping it fun.

Stretching – As an essential function for injury prevention, our clinic emphasizes the importance of stretching and dynamic warm-ups before doing any of our more strenuous basketball drills. These techniques are utilized to promote muscle flexibility and strengthening. As a group, players do various stretching and warm-up drills for the first 15-20 minutes of each clinic session.

Stations – In order to keep all players engaged with minimal downtime, players are first grouped by grade and then positioned at various stations. Each station has one to two coaches who run a particular drill that will involve either ball-handling, dribbling, passing, shooting, or defense. Some weeks, we also work on the basic rules and mental aspects of the game. Each group will rotate through all stations, gather as an entire group for a relay race or a fundamental-based game, and then end the night with a group cheer and snacks.

Cubby

At the 4th grade level, players enter a “Cubby” league and play games against other community center teams within the Seattle Parks & Recreation League. A coach assigned to the team will run one practice per week separate from the clinic session. Games start in January and are typically played Friday nights at local community centers. Cubby players are also welcomed and encouraged to attend each clinic session, in addition to their team practices. If interested in our Cubby program, please email clinic@scaayouth.org for more information.
